June 2009 - Cupping Die Rebuilding Options

Step Up Your PM and Save

Regular maintenance is an integral part of any can plant’s operation - and that includes the cupping dies.  Yet no one wants to spend any more than is absolutely necessary to keep things running smoothly.  A good way to achieve this is through Stolle’s stepped program of cupping die rebuild and maintenance.  You only pay for the service you need, you run for another year with confidence and your product quality remains at its peak.

“Customers want to maximize the life of their cupping dies, but they want other options than just a total die rebuild,” says Bob Gary, Senior VP of Sales for Stolle EMD.  “Stolle has developed a stepped maintenance process that gives the customer another year or more of peak operation before rebuilding the dies when they’re completely worn out.  “This multi level approach is designed to maximize a customer’s existing assets, reduce their annual maintenance costs, and still allow them to obtain a quality OEM rebuild.”  And since 97% of all cups in the industry are made on Stolle cuppers, there’s no substitute for the quality or reliability of a Stolle OEM rebuild.

Cupping dies that arrive at Stolle are analyzed for wear and the appropriate rebuild level is designated for the set.  A Level One rebuild is designed to keep a cupping die in production for a year or more before the more extensive Level Two rebuild.  The die set is disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, then the seals, fasteners, guide pin assemblies, and other parts are replaced and all components are inspected before reassembly.  A Level Two rebuild includes all of this plus machining of the inner, outer and lower die holder as needed to return the die set to original flat and parallel condition as well as realigning the scrap cutter.  For dies that need it, a total rebuild is the appropriate option.

Jerry Adams, Assembly Supervisor at Stolle Canton, says, “Our customers really do have more confidence when we do the work.  Since we made them originally, we have the insider knowledge for rebuilding all sizes and configurations of dies; Stolle, Redicon, CIP, Formatec or Standun.  When we’re done, Stolle certifies each rebuild and that guarantee is valuable.”
