August 2009 - Focus On Stolle Brazil

Big Things in Brazil

In May, the announcement of the formation of Stolle Europe generated quite a buzz.  This month, we’d like to shift our attention to the southern hemisphere and focus on our South American subsidiary, Stolle do Brasil.

Stolle Brazil traces its roots to 1997 when Preferred Machining Corporation (PMC) opened Preferred Brazil as a sales and service facility for that country.  In a unique turn of events, 2002 saw PMC acquired by Alcoa Packaging Equipment (APE) and Preferred Brazil acquired by Sequa Can Machinery.  In 2004, Alcoa sold APE which was renamed Stolle Machinery Company, and later that year Stolle acquired Sequa Can, which made Stolle Brazil a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stolle.

Stolle CMD President Gus Reall notes: “Our operation in Brazil started over 10 years ago with one building and a bit of inventory.  Today we’ve tripled our size, opened a second location, and now offer much more value to our customers with local inventory, local manufacturing of spare parts, local rebuild of die sets and other sub-assemblies, as well as local manufacturing of Stolle Preferred compound liners and inside spray machines. Our formula for continuing this (growth) includes a long term commitment to the can making business; having the best team available; lots of hard work and a great deal of support from our local customers.  With all those things, we will consistently increase our size - and our value - to our customers.”

Stolle Brazil’s facilities are located in the city of Indaiatuba in the coastal state of Sao Paulo, the most populous state in Brazil and a major industrial and economic center.  This past November, a new branch office in the Northern Brazilian city of Manaus became fully operational.  Stolle Machinery Amazonia has an inventory of OEM spares and staffs trained technicians to support the end plants opened in Manaus by Rexam BCA and Crown Embalagens.  Stolle Brazil also represents two other major can machinery suppliers in South America – Belvac (since 1999) and Sencon (since 2006).  They also have an agent in Venezuela (LHR Venezuela) to support that canmaking market and several other countries in South and Central America.

Recognizing Stolle Brazil’s invaluable contributions to their South American operations, canmaker Rexam presented them with their prestigious Supplier Award in the Innovation category last year.  According to Stolle Brazil General Manager Arnaldo Costa: “Rexam recognized a number of our initiatives, including the local production of compound liners, spray machines and spare parts, and especially for the opening of Stolle Amazonia which supplies kits and maintenance for Rexam Manaus and provides technical support in the local language, all of which has helped the plant to solve some important issues, have higher efficiency, and lower spoilage.”

In August of last year, Stolle Brazil celebrated their 10th anniversary with a gala celebration entitled New Times, New Ideas.  Attending this dinner and presentation were Stolle CEO Dave Groetsch, CMD President Gus Reall, EMD

President Greg Butcher, Brazilian managers Adilcimar Gomes, Geraldo Teixeira and Luiz Trova, as well as Roger Baker from Belvac, Eric Shields from Sencon, and Luis Rodrigues from LHR Venezuela.  Also attending were representatives from major customers Rexam Beverage Americas, Latapack Ball, Crown Embalagens, Metalgrafica Rojek, Industrias Polar and Dominguez & Cia (Venezuela).  Stolle CEO Dave Groetsch noted in his speech that “Stolle Brazil will continue to find new and better ways to support Stolle’s customers in South America, which will bring more value to the Stolle product line.”

Arnaldo wrapped up his New Times, New Ideas presentation with a heart-felt “thank you” to everyone who has contributed to the success of Stolle do Brasil, now and in the future:

MUITO OBRIGADO A TODOS   /   MUCHAS GRACIAS A TODOS   /   THANK YOU TO ALL!
