April 2009 - Cupping Press Rebuilding

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Bob Turnbull explains why press rebuilding makes sense today

Bob Turnbull is a happy man.  Not just because he’s restoring a 1966 Mustang for his wonderful daughter. (Although that is good.)  Bob’s happy because he’s one of those rare people that customers can ask, "How can I save some serious money in these tough economic times?" and he’s got a good answer.

"I tell them the best way to be able to justify a project with budget constraints is to rebuild an existing press. And I say that for three good reasons.  First, when we get these old DAC-150’s in, we take off the old feed, strip them down, install new columns from Minster and remachine the bed to a full 82.25" wide.  That means that customers can save by running full width stock and not paying an upcharge for narrow coil.  We also put in larger guide pins for better guidance and longer tool life.  And the rebuilt ones can run nicely at 200 strokes per minute.  So you’re saving metal, running 25% faster and you get two more pockets of tooling – and that’s just the start!"

"Secondly is the benefit of getting a turnkey package," Bob continues. "When you have Stolle rebuild your cupper, we control the schedule because it’s here from start to finish. You get the rebuild with all new Minster and OEM parts throughout.  But you also get the electrics, the die set, the roll feed – the whole package. We even assemble the whole system on the floor and test it before it goes back to make sure it’s working perfectly.  And that extends to the installation.  It only takes one Stolle service engineer and one electrical engineer to install it,  and you even save a bit on shipping because it’s only been to one place.  Like I said, it’s a total savings package."

"And the third reason is simple.  When you get a rebuild from Stolle, you get a full warranty from Stolle. The best name in the business, the best technicians and the latest technology all in one great cupping system with StollePlus service behind it. That’s like icing on the cake."

So far the only downside for Bob is the overwhelming  popularity of this option with customers.  As more and more of these rebuilds flood in, there’s simply less time in the day for Bob to get back to finishing that Mustang.
